Overview
Although the modern Irish tricolor flag is identified as green, white, and orange, with the green along the flagpole, the flag setup is also often compared with the setup associated with Côte d’Ivoire, though the flag colors are in the opposite direction. Historically, however, the flag of Ireland has also been manipulated during British rule into a saltire effectively resembling the English and Scottish flags, with red on white as opposed to white on blue from the Scottish design. Many Irish Nationalists criticize the flag design of the saltire as a British invention, while Irish Unionists, particularly associated with Northern Ireland, are often identified as embracing the flag and flag design instead.
