The State University System of Massachusetts contains higher educational institutions located in Bridgewater, Fitchburg, Framingham, Salem, Westfield, and Worcester. Bridgewater is the furthest south, Salem the furthest north, and Westfield the furthest west. Located more directly to the west of Boston is Framingham, while Worcester is the most centrally located within the Commonwealth (with Fitchburg nearby to the northwest, adjacent to the non-college community of Leominster). Additional colleges and universities associated with the State University System include art and design in Boston, liberal arts in North Adams, and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay.
The University of Massachusetts (UMass) system also exists within the Commonwealth, containing the Chan Medical School in Worcester, as well as UMass Global, providing UMass educational resources online from Aliso Viejo, California. The flagship campus is in Amherst; however, additional physical locations also exist in Boston, Dartmouth, and Lowell, with the School of Law also in Dartmouth.
