Overview

Though the Santee and Hopsewee Plantations are located nearby, the historical contexts of either plantation determine many of the cultural and economical differences. The Santee Plantation is on the south side of the South Santee River in Charleston County while the Hopsewee Plantation is situated near North Santee further north in Georgetown County. As with many plantations in the region in South Carolina, the historical context can largely be traced to the eighteenth (18th) century, between the years 1701 and 1800 and likely representative of the late colonial era in which South Carolina and, later, Georgia would have been settled.

Introduction

New York and Philadelphia are two of the most substantially populated cities in the Northeast Megalopolis and specifically within the Mid-Atlantic portion of the region. While New York is further north and largely associated with the old New Amsterdam and significant Dutch settlement, Philadelphia is located somewhat further south, along the Delaware River, and traditionally identified as New Sweden prior to Dutch control of the former region as part of the Mid-Atlantic region prior to the Quaker settlement that defines the modern Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Geographies

The City of Philadelphia, nicknamed “Philly” and often abbreviated “PHL,” is identified as approximately the location where the Delaware River flows into the beginning of the Delaware Bay, with the inner city on the west (Pennsylvania) side, the later construct of the Twelve Mile Circle separating the core urbanized area from the modern State of Delaware. The more modern constructs of suburban Philadelphia also extend east across the Delaware into New Jersey, as well as into light sprawl associated with similar Quaker heritage in modern-day Cecil County, Maryland.

While the City of Philadelphia is along the Delaware River and near the mouth of such river, the City of New York is officially located first along the East and Hudson Rivers, then nearby to the New York Harbor, then more to the tune of the particular islands in question. Manhattan remains the primary island, with Staten Island representing a separate borough and Long Island representing Brooklyn and Queens. The Bronx, the northernmost of the Five Boroughs of New York City, is actually located not just further inland, but also within the region largely associated with the mainland and derived from the southern portion of old Westchester County.

While Hype for the Future 67/284 focuses on the tourists and historical sites of Plymouth and the particular influence across the nation, the following content will refer to the local tourism and tourist sites associated with the region, as follows:

Village of Plymouth

Just outside the primary village area within the Town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, are the Plimoth Patuxet Museums, the Plimoth Patuxet Crafts Center, the Household of William Brewster, and the Plymouth Long Beach. On the western side of the village area is the National Monument to the Forefathers, while within the central village area are the numerous historical sites identified from the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact, including, but not limited to, the Mayflower II replica in the Pilgrim Memorial State Park.

The overall vibe of the Town of Plymouth should remain relatively charming and historic, with the compact environment reminiscent of the New England town and village centers located throughout the region. Multiple art galleries, museums, statues, and related historic sites are positioned within the Town, including the 1749 Court House Museum, the Plimoth Grist Mill, the Richard Sparrow House Museum, the Brewster Gardens, the Pilgrim Maiden Statue, the Kusmin Art Gallery, and the Jabez Howland House in the lower central area.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of the Town of Plymouth, not just in American history but in the local heritage of the town, county, and region, is Plymouth Rock, located directly along the Plymouth Harbor of the Atlantic Ocean. The William Bradford Statue is located nearby, nearly overlooking the river, though additional features include the Trask Museum, the Plymouth Center for the Arts, the Mayflower Society House, the Oh My Gifts & Gallery, and the overall atmosphere of the Plymouth Village Historic District. Further northwest within the town area are the Plymouth Memorial Hall, the Pilgrim Hall Museum, the seasonal Plymouth Waterfront Visitor Center, the Plymouth Harbor, Patrick Quinlan’s Eagle Project, Seas & Greetings, and the Hedge House Museum.

Introduction

The Middle Cape region of Barnstable County, Massachusetts, located approaching the main body of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts beyond the Outer and Lower Capes, is home to the Towns of Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Dennis, from west to east. Each of the three towns in the region is situated where the Cape Cod Bay is to the north and the Nantucket Sound is to the south, with every town containing a reasonable population base and seasonal influx every summer. Also, each of the communities along the Middle Cape are accessible by Route 6 in the north and Route 28 in the south.

Town of Dennis

The easternmost of the three towns comprising the Middle Cape region, the Town of Dennis is located directly to the west of the Towns of Harwich and Brewster, with the Corporation Beach on the northern shore and the nearby 1736 Josiah Dennis Manse Museum, Scargo Tower, and Cape Cod Museum of Art sites.

Within the Town of Dennis and elsewhere containing Route 28, the route is effectively an alternate to the freeway of Route 6 positioned further to the north. Facing the Nantucket Sound are the West Dennis Beach, the West Dennis Lighthouse with the Lighthouse Inn, and the South Village Beach. The Jericho Historical Center is also located nearby within the Town. Within the central portion of the town geographically is also the area referred to as Liberty Hall.

Town of Yarmouth

The Town of Yarmouth is located to the west of the Town of Dennis but to the east of Barnstable. In the transition zone between the communities, Yarmouth is home to the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Whydah House Museum, and the Yarmouth House along Route 28 in the south; and the Winslow Crocker House, the Captain Bangs Hallet House, the seasonal Edward Gorey House, and the art gallery of the Yarmouth New Church Preservation Foundation around the junction of Strawberry Lane and Main Street.

Town of Barnstable

The Town of Barnstable is located directly to the west of the Town of Yarmouth and serves as the county seat of Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Within the limits of the town, the Hyannis village area is perhaps among the most famous areas along the entirety of the Nantucket Sound. From the port at Hyannis are ferry services to Nantucket and to the Martha’s Vineyard community of Vineyard Haven in Oak Bluffs.

Along Route 28 just northwest of the village of Cotuit are the Cahoon Museum of American Art and the Chapman Art Gallery located on opposite sides of the main highway. Along Route 6A, from west to east on the opposite corner of the Town of Barnstable, are the Tales of Cape Cod museum, the Coast Guard Heritage Museum, and the Cape Cod Art Center. At the southeastern end of the Town near the community of Hyannis are the Toad Hall Classic Car Museum, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, and the three-star Hyannis Inn.

Introduction

Though Saint Augustine was not settled as part of British Colonial America but as part of New Spain in early European imperialism, the community of Saint Augustine has since been transformed by the Flagler heritage representative of the entirety of the modern State of Florida, and especially Northern Florida.

History

Founded by the Spanish in 1565, Saint Augustine has largely been identified by the iconic structures associated with the community, including the Ponce de León Hotel which has since evolved into the central hall of Flagler College. Today, Flagler College hosts not just admission-related college tours, but also college tours specifically dedicated to the history of Saint Augustine as a community for the general public, thanks to the former land uses associated with the Flagler College campus.

Fort Matanzas

Far to the south of the City of Saint Augustine, but still related to Route A1A and the historic Spanish settlers, was the historic site of Fort Matanzas, now maintained by the National Park Service as the Fort Matanzas National Monument. Today, the area is identified as being situated on a salt marsh, though the ferry service associated with the monument is typically decommissioned every Tuesday and Wednesday. Opposite the Matanzas River from the barrier island of Anastasia, the community is strictly identified by the Floridian and earlier Spanish heritage of the general coastal and subtropical area.

Anastasia Island

At the northern end of Anastasia Island in the City of Saint Augustine is the Saint Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, which, unlike much of the State of Florida overall, may actually be LGBTQIA+ 🏳️‍🌈-friendly when interpreting the historical significance of the area. The museum area is also popularly identified by an 1874 black-and-white striped lighthouse and an embedded shipyard playground located at the museum site.

Urban Form

Though the City of Saint Augustine was identified as a settlement associated with New Spain, the community was also developed in an organic pattern surprisingly similar to the numerous communities of the New England colonies, though the significantly flatter area and Spanish settlement patterns had also influenced the Floridian urban form. Since the city was first established in 1565 near the mouths of the Matanzas and San Sebastián Rivers, the City of Saint Augustine has maintained an urban form oriented from south to north. Today, however, the rural fringe area is also home to the Saint Augustine Aquarium along Route 16 nearer Interstate 95 further west.

Introduction

The Towns of Truro and Wellfleet are typically considered the second and third towns up the Cape Cod Peninsula in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. If Provincetown is most notable for the queer community of artists and musicians, Truro and Wellfleet are notable for very similar reasons, albeit to a significantly reduced extent.

Town of Truro

The Cape Cod National Seashore represents the outermost end (facing the open Atlantic) of the Cape Cod Peninsula, particularly at the points of the Lower and Middle Cape regions. In the Middle Cape region, the Town of Truro is home to the Highland Lighthouse, the Jenny Lind Tower, and numerous beaches and related facilities—all related to the Cape Cod National Seashore. More centrally located within the Town of Truro are the Thomas A.D. Watson Artist’s Studio, A Will O’ the Wisp, the Truro Center of the Arts at Castle Hill, the Original Corn Hill Marker, the Corn Hill Memorial Plaque, and Corn Hill itself.

Town of Wellfleet

Along the western side of the Town of Wellfleet are the Samuel Smith Tavern Site, the Atwood-Higgins House Complex, and the Thomas Lombard Cemetery, the last of which is located along the Truro town line. The Planet Blue Sky Studio is an art studio at the southern end of the town along Route 6, with a drive-in movie theater located to the west of the studio. Along the Cape Cod National Seashore are the ruins of the Marconi Wireless Station for transatlantic communications from 1903 as well as the White Crest Beach.

In the central village area of the Town of Wellfleet, the northeastern section of the area is home to not just Burgess Mountain, but also the Road House Gallery. The Chequessete Burial Ground and First Meeting House is located on the western end, with Commercial Street representing the central village street and the Main Street role akin to the Commercial Street in Provincetown. Also located away from Commercial Street are the Duck Creek Railway Bridge, the FARMPROJECTS Art Gallery, the Wellfleet Preservation Hall, the Wellfleet OysterFest 🦪 (in mid-October), the Nicholas Harrison Gallery, the AMZehnder Gallery, the Blue Heron Gallery, the Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum, and the Wellfleet Town Clock 🕰️. Located to the south (west along Route 6) of the Town of Wellfleet and to the north (east along Route 6) of the Town of Orleans is the Town of Eastham in Barnstable County, home to the notable Orleans/Eastham Rotary along the southern town line as well as the most notable portion of the Cape Cod Rail Trail at and around fifteen miles into the trail and the site of the Eastham Railway Station as well as the site of Bridge Road Cemetery, both on and along the trail area.

The Tercentenary Memorial Plaque of the Pilgrims’ First Encounter is on the western shore of the town, facing the Cape Cod Bay, while the Coast Guard Station, the Nauset Lighthouse, and the Three Sisters Lighthouses are located on the eastern shore, facing the open Atlantic Ocean. Cape Cod Rail Trail parking is available on the northern side of town near Nauset Road, and the Salt Pond Visitor Center of the Cape Cod National Seashore and the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum are located more centrally within the village area of Eastham.

Town of Orleans

The Town of Orleans is located within Barnstable County, Massachusetts, to the south of the Town of Eastham but to the north of the Town of Harwich. At the southern end of the town limits is the South Orleans Beach; also associated with the island, though largely more in Harwich, is the Gibbs’ Marsh.

The River Road Town Landing and the Orleans Historical Society alike are identified by the locations more identified within the general village area of East Orleans. More centrally located within the Village of Orleans are the Jonathan Young Windmill, the Edward Hopper Corner Portrait of Orleans, and the Eastwind Studio, Coastal Craft, Left Bank, Turn Me Knot, Addison, Tree’s Place, and Frying Pan (Orleans) Galleries. Introduction

The Town of Provincetown is located at the tail end of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. At the side of the Pilgrims’ Landing of 1620, Provincetown today maintains ferry access to Boston and Plymouth on the opposite side of Massachusetts Bay.

Importance

The Town of Provincetown, Massachusetts, is a regional hub for the LGBTQIA+ community and is associated with the summer season, similar to the numerous communities of coastal Maine. Within Barnstable County, Massachusetts, the Town of Provincetown is also identified as a regional hub for the occasional year-round settlers of the regional population of artists, lesbians, and gays, thus representing a queer haven providing particular safety for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Geography

The Town of Provincetown is effectively located at the tail end of the Cape Cod Peninsula, with the Provincetown Harbor in the vicinity and the general area of the Massachusetts Bay primarily to the west with the open Atlantic Ocean to the north. To the south is the particular portion of the Massachusetts Bay known as the Cape Cod Bay, with the latter identified as defining lie throughout the general Cape Cod region.

Transportation

The Town of Provincetown is primarily served by United States Route 6, accessible from the SouthCoast and surrounding regions, though the ferry services also provide access to Boston and Plymouth opposite the Massachusetts Bay and the Cape Cod Bay, respectively. Though Route 6 serves the role of the principal artery through the town, Commercial Street, a parallel street just to the south, provides the vast majority of amenities for the community.

Attractions

The Fowler, Frenchie’s, and Grail Dune Shacks are located within the limits of Provincetown, while the Ray Wells Dune Shack is located within the town limits of nearby Truro.

Along Commercial Street in the Town of Provincetown, the LGBTQIA+-friendly attractions and amenities for the community include nineteenth-century homes as well as lively art galleries, restaurants (particularly the obvious seafood restaurants serving the community), and cafés. The northern and inland portion of York County, Maine, represents the overall earliest inland settlements associated with the modern State of Maine, such as Sanford and Waterboro further north. Within the central portion of the Town of Waterboro is the Taylor/Frey/Leavitt House Museum, while within the City of Sanford is the Oldtimer’s Shop.

Introduction

The Towns of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor are largely associated with the summer season, both along the Atlantic Ocean with Boothbay slightly further inland (north) within Lincoln County, Maine. Though Monhegan Island and its associated plantation may be more accessible from Knox County to the east, the island area is also considered part of Lincoln County, albeit separately identified from the Boothbay communities. Boothbay Harbor is situated to the south of Boothbay and is home to the most significant of summer communities in the vicinity.

Boothbay

Within the Town of Boothbay, the most notable attraction in the community just south of Damariscotta is the Boothbay Railway Village Museum. Though the Boothbay Harbor area is situated nearby and to the south, Boothbay is also home to the Ocean Point area situated to the east of Boothbay Harbor. The village area at Ocean Point is home to the Bluebird Ocean Point Inn as well as the Ocean Point Walk, with the Ram Island Lighthouse located yet further to the south. While Damariscove Island, Pumpkin Island, and Outer Heron Island are located quite distantly from the mainland area of the Town of Boothbay, the three aforementioned islands are each included within the community.

Boothbay Harbor

Situated just to the south of the Town of Boothbay is the Town of Boothbay Harbor, consisting primarily of the relatively densely populated village area at Boothbay Harbor. At the southern end of the town are the Sail Muscongus Day Tours, though the Maine State Aquarium is located on the opposite (west) side of Boothbay Harbor. Further north, the major tourist attractions of the Boothbay Harbor area are the footbridge, the historic district, and the Mysterious Harbor Tours at Boothbay Harbor. Many of the town facilities, including the signature Boothbay Harbor Lobster Wharf, are seasonal, as with many of the otherwise related local amenities of the State of Maine and especially the MidCoast region.

Hype for the Future 64D: Lincoln County, Maine (North of Boothbay)

Introduction

Lincoln County, Maine, is located partly at the western end of the Waldo Patent and otherwise in the vicinity of the Atlantic Ocean, bounded by Knox County to the east, Sagadahoc County to the west, Kennebec County to the northwest, and Waldo County to the northeast. The county seat of Lincoln County is the community of Wiscasset, and much of the county is traversed by way of United States Route 1 along the Atlantic Ocean. On the eastern edge of the county is the Town of Waldoboro, descending from the Waldo Patent and home to the historic Waldoboro Inn, the Waldoborough Historical Society, and the Recycleart sculpture museum.

West of Waldoboro

To the west of the Town of Waldoboro and of the Waldo Patent, Lincoln County is also home to Damariscotta and Newcastle in the central portion of the county on either side of the Damariscotta River, with the Jan Kilburn Art Studio representing the eastern (Damariscotta) side while the Newcastle-Damariscotta Station is representative of the western (Newcastle) side of the community. Further south along the Damariscotta are the Frances Perkins National Monument on the west side and the Chapin Studio Gallery at Stoneridge and the Hawks House Inn on the east side.

The Edgecomb area, though nowhere near the true definition of the Down East region, is home to the Down East Gallery, with the Wiscasset community to the west serving as home to the Sylvan, Wiscasset Bay, and Maine Art Galleries as well as the Museum in the Streets, Castle Tucker, the Powder House, the Nickels-Sortwell House, and the Lincoln County Museum, with a welcome sign at the southern end along U.S. Route 1. Along Route 218, the Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington Railway Museum is located in the southern part of the Town of Alna.

Introduction

To the south of the City of Rockland, the Penobscot Bay gives way to the more open Atlantic Ocean in the relatively more southerly immediate vicinity. With the transition from Rockland to the Atlantic Ocean comes additional islands, particularly the aforementioned island locations, as well as the Saint George Peninsula to the west of the Penobscot Bay.

Saint George Peninsula

In the southern fringe of the City of Rockland are the Sail Power and Steam Museum and Gallery Fukurou, and further south are the numerous amenities associated with the Saint George Peninsula. Owls Head, home to the village of Ash Point, is also home to the Knox County Regional Airport as well as the Owls Head Transportation Museum. Within the Spruce Head area of Saint George is the Craignair Inn by the Sea, while further south on the peninsula are the East Wind Inn on the Water, the Granite Gallery, and the Marshall Point Lighthouse and Museum.

West of the Saint George Peninsula

The Towns of Cushing and Friendship are located within Knox County, Maine, though they are each west of the Saint George Peninsula proper. The Town of Cushing is home to the Olson House and the Langlais Art Preserve, while the Town of Friendship is home to the Friendship Museum. The Town of Thomaston is home to the Thomaston Historical Society and the Montpelier facility of the Knox Museum, while the Town of South Thomaston is located at the northwestern edge of the Saint George Peninsula and is home to the Finnish Heritage House. Finally, the Town of Warren, Maine, is located directly to the east of the Town of Waldoboro and the Lincoln County line, with the community serving as home to the Warren Historical Society Museum.

Hype for the Future 63P: Town of Gouldsboro, Maine

Overview

The Town of Gouldsboro is located in the lower coastal portion of the Down East in Hancock County, Maine. Located relatively southeast in the county along Route 186 is Elsa’s Inn and Harbor Bed and Breakfast, while the Red Barn Motel of Milbridge in Washington County along Route 1 is also located fairly nearby for motorists. Both of the aforementioned places to stay are effectively identified as tourist pipelines to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park.

Introduction

The vast majority of the population of the State of Maine continues to live south of 45° North, the dividing line between the more southerly communities associated with higher population densities and more maritime traditions and the more northerly communities associated with the interior and with frontier life and culture.

Washington County

The county seat of Washington County is the Town of Machias, representing the cultural atmosphere throughout the entirety of the Down East region in the State of Maine. On Moose Island, coterminous with the Town of Eastport, are the scenic turnout near the entrance to the island town, as well as the historic downtown area containing the Tides Institute and Museum of Art. The James O’Neil Gallery is located on the northern side of the mainland Town of Lubec though the art may primarily be accessible on a website online.

Lubec / Washington County

The Town of Lubec contains West Quoddy Head, the easternmost point in the Contiguous United States on land. However, the community is also home to the closest point of CONUS to the continent of Africa, with a different point in the State serving the role of the closest proximity to Europe.

The downtown area of Lubec contains the notable Inn on the Wharf, as well as the attractions on Water Street including the Lost Fisherman’s Memorial, the McCurdy Smokehouse Museum, and the Mulholland Market Gallery. The Eastern Beacon Inn may also be available for lodging on occasional circumstances.

Further south in the Lubec area is the Lubec Channel Lighthouse Overlook, followed by the South Lubec gallery known as the Crow Town Gallery. At the very eastern end is the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, notable for being the easternmost point on CONUS as well as America’s first sunrise on continental land around the equinoxes.

Machias / Washington County

The Town of Machias is located facing the open Atlantic Ocean to the south and serves as the county seat of Washington County, Maine. While most commonly known as home to the University of Maine at Machias, the Burnham Tavern Museum within the inner village area and the Gates House in the outlying town area further southeast are each relevant to the scope of the situation.

Milbridge / Washington County

The Town of Milbridge is toward the southern end of the Atlantic coast of Washington County, Maine, and is home to the Milbridge Historical Society and Museum as well as to the Schooner Gallery.

novaTopFlex is expanding the novaTop Travel Itinerary throughout much of North and Central Jersey, referring, of course, to the northern and central portions of New Jersey down toward approximately the latitude line of the geographic center of the State. Such locations as historical farmhouses and Dutch Colonial historic sites are becoming of significant interest, and so are musical and artistic interests that exist throughout the region. Notable locations of interest are largely within range of New York City, particularly Downtown Freehold, Asbury Park, and Perth Amboy.

The State of Delaware: Introduction

Delaware is a Mid-Atlantic to Southern border state in the United States of America, on the East Coast facing the Atlantic Ocean with the second-smallest land area of states in the nation. Only Rhode Island is smaller by area, but like in Rhode Island, the Atlantic coastline is very important to life in the State. The major bay of the State is the Delaware Bay, while the state capital city is the City of Dover. The State contains exactly three (3) counties, from north to south New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. The respective county seats are Wilmington, Dover, and Georgetown, and only Sussex County actually touches the open Atlantic Ocean and contains the beaches and resort villages for the entire State, as well as early Dutch history at the old Zwaanendael Colony at present-day Lewes. Rural Mid-Atlantic Pine Barrens

While the most rural areas in New Jersey are largely determined by pine barren geography, the eastern portion of Long Island in New York is also somewhat associated with the pine barren ecosystems. Although the pine barren regions on Long Island are not nearly as famous as in New Jersey, the pine barren region in Suffolk County is very real nonetheless.
