Introduction
Located in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, the City of Northampton is used as the county seat and is connected to the countercultural and queer communities at large. Within Hampshire County, the City of Northampton is a feminist hub thanks to the presence of Smith College as well as the presence of a large lesbian population with a generous political background as with much of the county. Though the Town of Amherst may have a larger overall population, the commercial center of the county is more or less identified as the City of Northampton, the county seat of Hampshire County. Northampton is located immediately to the west of the Connecticut River with the Town of Hadley on the opposite side along Route 9, and the community is home to very intelligent people from nearly every possible countercultural background, including artists and musicians.
Though the downtown area may have been in a decline in recent years, the City of Northampton remains relatively iconic thanks to the Hotel Northampton and the Three County Fair, serving Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties. While Fair Street may be legally closed under numerous situations, the street continues to serve residents on Fair Street as well as the aforementioned fair area. Unfortunately, as with most fairgrounds, car dependency is quite an inevitable feature. However, the community of Northampton is expected to serve the larger communities to the south within the fair occasion as well as the smaller communities to the north approaching Vermont, including Northfield directly on the state line.
