Introduction
The Cities of Lewiston and Auburn are located on opposite banks of the Androscoggin River within Androscoggin County, Maine. While the City of Lewiston is notable for being home to Bates College and the associated Bates College Museum of Art, the City of Auburn is the county seat of Androscoggin.
Combined Area
The City of Lewiston is located on the east side of the river with the City of Auburn nearby to the west. Lewiston is ranked second out of all cities in Maine in terms of population, while Auburn is ranked fifth. Only Portland is larger than Lewiston, and only the aforementioned cities, Bangor, and South Portland claim more residents than the City of Auburn.
The Historic Auburn Riverwalk Iron Bridge is a recreational bridge connecting Lewiston to the east with Auburn to the west. While Auburn is not technically classified as a college town, the City of Auburn is effectively a modern extension of the larger City of Lewiston over the Androscoggin, with Lewiston also containing the Maine MILL museum site and the iconic Inn at the Agora as well as the Lewiston-Auburn Campus of the University of Southern Maine (USM LAC) at the southeast fringe of the city area. While not much exists for tourists on the Auburn side, the tourism council for Maine’s Lakes and Mountains is located within the city area.
