Introduction
The Town of New Shoreham is the smallest municipality in the State of Rhode Island by population, with fewer than two thousand permanent residents. The community is only accessible externally by way of ferries from Montauk, New London, Narragansett, or Newport/Fall River; or by commercial passenger air service from Block Island State Airport to Westerly State Airport in the mainland City of Westerly.
Attractions
At the northern end of Block Island (New Shoreham) are the North Lighthouse, the Settlers Rock, and the Labyrinth. The Coast Guard Beach and Dories Cove are on the western edge of the island area, with the Painted Rock, the Mohegan Bluffs, and the Southeast Lighthouse toward the southern end of the island and town. Natural Hole and the Native American Cemetery of Isaac’s Corner are known attractions along the vicinity of Lakeside Drive in the area.
Central Village
The central village area of New Shoreham is home to numerous art galleries for such a small community, including (from north to south) Gallery Padien, the Greenaway Gallery, and the Spring Street Gallery. The Old Harbor Historic District area is also home to the Block Island Historical Society, the Forest and Sassy Honor System Grain Honor Exchange, the Heritage Museum, the Statue of Rebecca, the Statue of Block Island, and numerous hotels, resorts, restaurants, and related community amenities.
