Introduction
Cheshire County is located at the southwest corner of the State of New Hampshire, along the lines with both Vermont and Massachusetts. Most notable for surrounding Mount Monadnock, the county is home to a substantial land area with the community of Keene as the county seat, home to Keene State College, the Historical Society of Cheshire County, and the local Soldiers’ Monument.
Outside Keene
Outside the City of Keene, not much exists for tourism within the southwestern county of New Hampshire, as Monadnock represents a mountain isolate surrounded on all sides by dramatically flatter terrain, even in spite of being physically located in the broader Appalachian region.
Along Route 9, the Stone Arch Bridge Historical Marker is located within the Town of Stoddard, near the county line with Hillsborough County, home to Manchester and Nashua, further east. Directly to the east of the historical marker is the Town of Antrim, located within the area nearly due west of the City of Manchester, the largest community in the State of New Hampshire.
Within the Towns of Jaffrey and Rindge are the historic Jaffrey Town Common and Gazebo and Franklin Pierce University, respectively. Along the northern Jaffrey town line is the relatively isolated Mount Monadnock, representative of the regional and cultural heritage to the southeast of the City of Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.
