Bristol County, Massachusetts
Centered around New Bedford, the County of Bristol is often a challenging county to understand properly. While the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is only the second most Portuguese of the United States of America, Bristol County may actually be more Portuguese than the entire State of Rhode Island in comparison. Also, Bristol County is primarily in the SouthCoast of Massachusetts, and the SouthCoast region is heavily associated with Rhode Island throughout centuries of elated history. Though the fact that the county may be surprisingly heavily Portuguese may be quite intriguing, the Portuguese heritage and national pride of the region is actually heavily–and directly–descended from the whaling and maritime history shared between the SouthCoast and Portugal (including Madeira and the Azores Islands off the coast of Africa).
Rhode Island
Though the State of Rhode Island is often identified as unique in terms of fully being located in a single metropolitan area, Providence, the region is actually significantly more complicated. Although the State of Rhode Island extends well beyond the urbanized zones around Providence into Rhode Island as well as the Charlestown and Westerly areas, the Providence region is at the center of the Portuguese-American community at large, although Hawaii is also approximately four percent Portuguese (lower than the percentages in Rhode Island and Massachusetts).
