Introduction
Licking County is located slightly east of the City of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio, using Newark as the county seat and also containing Heath, Granville, and a number of other significant communities located elsewhere. Today, Licking County is heavily identified as a county with a significant heritage, particularly with the Welsh cultural traits present within the Welsh Hills, including the Village of Granville.
Village of Granville
Named for the Town of Granville in Hampden County, Massachusetts, the Village of Granville is most notable for being home to Denison University. However, beyond Denison University itself but still in the general scope of the village area are the Denison, Robbins Hunter, and Granville Historical Society Museums; as well as the James Young Fine Art gallery.
Newark and Heath
The Cities of Newark and Heath represent a combined smaller urban cluster centrally located within Licking County. Of the two communities, Newark is the community to the north, with a larger population and the satellite campus of The Ohio State University at Newark. Further east within the community, the Licking County Courthouse Square is of historical significance, while a museum known as The Works exists to provide interactive exhibits for the general area. Between the communities of Newark and Granville off Route 16 is also the historic “Alligator Mound.”
