Introduction
Jay is located at effectively the northwest edge of Orleans County, Vermont, and is often identified as one of the northernmost towns in the State. Jay Peak Resort and the official Jay Peak itself are each located not in Jay, despite their names, but in Westfield to the south. North Jay Peak, however, is located in Jay and serves as the highest peak in the Town.
Geography
Jay, Vermont, is one of several towns in Vermont to have territory that, due to survey errors, continues slightly north of the forty-fifth parallel of latitude north of the equatorial plane. Even though the aforementioned latitude line is supposed to determine the southern boundary of Québec, Canada, the portion in the United States of America that lies north of the forty-fifth parallel is also notable further east for having the border oddity of the Haskell Free Library and Opera House partly in Derby Line in the Town of Derby and otherwise in Stanstead, Québec. In the Town of Jay, however, the immediate surrounding communities are exclusively towns and similarly rural territory in any direction, with Route 105 leading east to the Town of Troy and west leading west to the Town of Richford in Franklin County. Only Westfield to the south shares a border with the Town of Jay inaccessible via Route 105; however, Route 242, as branching west from Route 101 in Troy through Jay, provides access to the aforementioned Town of Westfield.
