Hype for the Future 62LPM: Town of Lincoln, Maine

Introduction

The Town of Lincoln is located in Penobscot County, Maine, moderately to the north of Bangor and within relatively close proximity to Interstate 95 in the region. Lincoln is located at the crossroads of the Down East to the southeast, the Aroostook Valley to the north, the Upper Penobscot Valley for which the community is located, and the Mount Katahdin region to the northwest. Overall, however, the Town of Lincoln is a community of just under five thousand residents as of the 2020 United States Census.

Attractions

Not much is suitable for tourism in the inner Town of Lincoln, though Our Heroes Military Museum is located within town limits. Places to stay include the Whitetail Inn and Suites immediately west of the museum, as well as the Lincoln House Motel and numerous similar facilities and cabins on the outskirts of town.

Hype for the Future 62MDM: Town of Medway, Maine

Overview

The Town of Medway is located in Penobscot County, Maine, south of the Mount Katahdin Scenic Overlook and rest area with no services along Interstate 95. At the exit to Route 157 is the Gateway Inn, which provides access to the general Millinocket area further west and the Mount Katahdin region somewhat further to the west.

Hype for the Future 62R: Moro Plantation, Maine

Introduction

Moro Plantation is a plantation in the southern portion of Aroostook County, Maine, identified as part of the fifth range west of the easterly line of the State with New Brunswick, Canada. Despite the Aroostook County location, Moro Plantation is home to lodging associated with the relatively distant Mount Katahdin further west into Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties.

The Aroostook Scenic Highway

The Aroostook Scenic Highway, Maine Route 11, first enters Aroostook County from the south at the Town of Hersey, shortly followed by Moro Plantation, with the Katahdin Lodge as the first primary attraction in the Plantation, followed by the hunting club at the North Country Lodge.

Hype for the Future 62K: Baxter State Park

Introduction

Baxter State Park, home to the highest point of the State of Maine at Mount Katahdin, is a tribute to the “magnificent obsession” by Percival P. Baxter of protecting a significant acreage of wilderness in the interior portion of the State.

About the Park

All roads leading into Baxter State Park are unpaved, narrow, and with size limits on vehicles. Vehicular parking is restricted to the three trailheads associated with Mount Katahdin, largely by way of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. As with many of the magnificent state parks in Maine, the operating season ranges from around Memorial Day to around Indigenous Peoples’ Day as observed by the State.

Winter Closures

For early January 2026, Baxter State Park is closed to ATVs, snowmobiles, and all vehicular traffic, as part of a seasonal closure prior to the Memorial Day holiday.

Location

While Millinocket in northern Penobscot County is often deemed the “Gateway to Mount Katahdin,” the entirety of Baxter State Park is located further northwest into the northeastern portion of neighboring Piscataquis County. Millinocket, by the way, is home to the headquarters of specifically Baxter State Park.
