Introduction
While Franklin is often the first name associated with the northwestern corner of Warren County, Ohio, the smaller community of Carlisle is located entirely on the west side of the Great Miami River, with select residents of Franklin on the west side occasionally being mistaken—or at least mislabeled—as Carlisle residents. Both are located primarily within Warren County; however, the community of Carlisle and Franklin Township directly border Madison Township of Butler County, with the northern edge of Carlisle also extending into Montgomery County, Ohio.
Franklin and Carlisle Compared
Though Franklin and Carlisle were largely settled by the same groups of people in the European settlement of the modern United States, the division of Franklin Township largely associated with the east-west split had historically identified Carlisle as the northeast edge of Butler County, with Franklin on the Warren County side of the Great Miami River. Today, Franklin and Carlisle continue to be located further upstream along the Great Miami River with regard to Middletown and Trenton, respectively. The historical contexts are slightly different, however; Carlisle, Ohio, was most likely a transplant from the City of Carlisle near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for instance. Many of the early settlers were from notable New Netherland families largely associated with Freehold and surrounding communities in Monmouth County, New Jersey, including the Wyckoff, Schenck, Conover (formerly Van Couvenhoven), and Lefferts families, just to name a few.
