Introduction
The Town of North Haven, Maine, is located on the Island of North Haven in Knox County, Maine, just north of the Town of Vinalhaven and its associated island. While North Haven is a smaller island in the Fox Islands by area, the population on the island is culturally coextensive with the more populated Vinalhaven.
Access
There are no Maine State Highways on the Island of North Haven—or any of the other Fox Islands—and the sole access to the Island of North Haven is by way of a state-maintained ferry ⛴️ from the Rockland Ferry Terminal to the island. While automobiles are permitted on North Haven, the island is typically considered fairly easy to walk and bike around, so tourists may be recommended to temporarily leave their cars on the mainland in Rockland.
Things to Do
Eric Hopkins and his close and extended family members alike have been associated with the Hopkins Wharf Gallery, with the adjacent North Haven Gift Shop taking a separate building, both at the southern end of the island closest to Vinalhaven. Unfortunately, however, there exists no direct route from North Haven to Vinalhaven without a mainland connection to Rockland, but even within North Haven, the Historical Museum and Archives on School Road represent the historical context of the island as well as the larger area representing MidCoast Maine.
Place to Stay
The North Haven Inn and Market combines accommodations, ferry service, food, and groceries all into the same facility and general area and represents the primary place to stay on North Haven, at least officially.
Culture
The chief farming culture on the Island of North Haven is aquaculture, and particularly oyster, farming. Multiple official farms are located particularly on the eastern side of the island to represent the aquaculture industry, which remains functional at a small scale to this day.
