Overview
The modern-day Canadian National Anthem, “O Canada!,” is the official national anthem in both English and French throughout the Confederation. Originally written in the French language, the English lyrics would not become official until circa 1980, never intending to be a direct translation of the original French lyrics. Even in spite of the distinction, the English lyrics would not withstand the test of time, with gender neutrality becoming the most significant of significant issues. Rather than referring to specifically “thy sons,” complete inclusivity is now preferred within the situation and context, as was always the case in the French lyrics.
