Introduction
Located in the southwestern portion of the State of Ohio, immediately east of Cincinnati and Hamilton County itself, is Clermont County, most notable for the numerous communities of cultural significance in the region. While the western side contains suburban areas such as Milford and Loveland, the more central communities include Batavia (the county seat), Amelia, and Owensville (home to the Clermont County Fairgrounds), as well as Goshen further north and Williamsburg further east, just to name a few additional communities.
The Communities
Within the relatively diverse Clermont County are a similarly diverse set of communities associated with the multicultural heritage of the historic region, particularly thanks to the “melting pot” of the Appalachian region. Though Melungeons may not necessarily be as well-known in Clermont as in locations deeper into the Appalachian Mountains, the influences from the heritage remain relatively steady nonetheless.
Along the Ohio River is the Village of New Richmond, home to the Cardboard Boat Museum and the Ross-Gowdy House Museum. Between the communities of Amelia and Batavia is the Tri-County Warbird Museum associated with the Clermont County Airport. Though associated with inner Cincinnati, the Nature Center is also largely associated with Clermont, along with the East Fork State Park located to the southwest of the community of Williamsburg.
Within the Village of Bethel and the associated Tate Township is the Bethel Historical Society and Museum, while within Owensville are the Clermont County Fairgrounds. Similarly, the Village of Goshen is home to the Goshen Township Historical Society of the associated area.
Loveland and Milford
The westernmost of the significant communities, Loveland and Milford, are located both on the western edge of Clermont County and on the eastern edge of Hamilton County. Loveland is further north, with the Little Miami River clearly demarcating the county line between Hamilton and Clermont Counties, though the primary Little Miami Scenic Trailhead is located on the Clermont side of the river. On the Hamilton County side of the river are the Loveland Castle Museum, the Loveland Historical Society Museum, Art House II, the William Schickel Gallery, and the Loveland Artist Studios on Main. Further south, the City of Milford is home to the Row House Gallery in the north and the Millcroft Gallery in the south.
