Northfield, Minnesota
Located in Northfield, Minnesota, Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges share heritage as a direct result of shared community backgrounds. However, Carleton College is located further northeast while St. Olaf College is located relatively further northwest. Both are located south of the Twin Cities urbanized area yet still north of Faribault, the county seat of Rice County, Minnesota. The dichotomy becomes even more obvious when referring to the etymologies of either college: Carleton is named for William Carleton, a Yankee from Massachusetts, whereas St. Olaf is named for a particular Norwegian saint.
