Big Townships
Within the State of Maine, the Big Twenty, Big Ten, and Big Six Townships receive special designations related to being larger than standard Maine townships by land area. The Big Twenty Township is pinned to the combined areas that would be Township 20, Range 11, West of the Easterly Line of the State and Township 20, Range 12, West of the Easterly Line of the State. Big Ten Township refers specifically to Township 10, Range 17, West of the Easterly Line of the State, while Big Six Township refers to Township 6, Range 19, West of the Easterly Line of the State.

The Townships West of the Easterly Line of the State begin with Range 2, surveyed earliest with lettered townships, today with A furthest south and E furthest north. Interestingly, the area of Township E, Range 2, West of the Easterly Line of the State has since evolved into E Plantation and is now officially known simply as E Township.
Starting with Range 3, the townships have become numbered, and the grid system more organized. However, at Ranges 10 and 11 south of Township 1, the lettered system of townships returns, with Townships A north of Townships B in this specific regional case.
