The Town of Williamstown is located at the extreme northwestern corner of both Berkshire County and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, adjoining the New York and Vermont state lines. Immediately to the north is the Town of Pownal, in Bennington County, Vermont. The Town of Pownal is also better known as the “Gateway to Vermont” and is located at the southernmost point of U.S. Route 7 in the Green Mountain State. As the region locally forms a tri-state area, each of the regional cultures apparently blend into one another, resulting in a unique cultural identity that cannot be identified by parts based on Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont influences. North Adams is located nearby, directly adjoining the eastern town line of Williamstown, and serving as one of the westernmost cities of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as well as the smallest by population.
Overall, the Town of Williamstown is primarily notable for being the location of the Clark Art Institute as well as of Williams College. Williams College maintains numerous art exhibitions within campus boundaries, while the Clark Art Institute is located somewhat to the southwest, outside campus boundaries. The Town of Williamstown is actually more or less identified as within the Taconic Mountains, geologically distinct from the more notable Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.
