Overview
Though the west-central townships in Maine are often named townships, most of the townships further east lack proper names and have generic alphanumeric codes that may be experienced by hikers and local and remote travelers alike. Such codes include the following:
- WELS: West of the Easterly Line of the State (townships in Northern Maine)
- BPP: Bingham’s Penobscot Purchase
- ED: East Division
- MD: Middle Division
- ND: North Division
- SD: South Division
- BKP: Bingham’s Kennebec Purchase
- EKR: East of the Kennebec River
- WKR: West of the Kennebec River
- NWP: North of the Waldo Patent
